Craig Lee (Ph.D. Anthropology 2007)

Craig is an Assistant Professor of Anthropology at Montana State University in his hometown of Bozeman, a Research Affiliate at the Institute of Arctic and Alpine Research (INSTAAR), and a former Principal Investigator at Metcalf Archaeological Consultants, Inc. A major portion of his research has focused on the archaeo-ecology of alpine snow and ice with an emphasis on involving Indigenous communities and professionals from other disciplines in these unique spaces. University students regularly participate in fieldwork and analysis. Last year he designed and taught a seminar on the archaeology of the cryosphere (frozen world).

Alumna, Katie McGuire (Biological Anthropology, PhD 2023) has accepted a position as a Science Informationist at Cold Spring Harbor Laboratory.  Founded in 1890, Cold Spring Harbor Laboratory has shaped contemporary biomedical research and education with programs in cancer, neuroscience, plant biology and quantitative biology. Home to eight Nobel Prize winners, the private, not-for-profit Laboratory employs 1,000 people including 600 scientists, students and technicians. The Meetings & Courses Program hosts more than 12,000 scientists from around the world each year on its campuses in Long Island and in Suzhou, China. The Laboratory’s education arm also includes an academic publishing house, a graduate school and programs for middle, high school, and undergraduate students and teachers.

Her article argues that while home ownership in the US has historically favored white Americans, its biases also generate a class of white homeowners who struggle to achieve respectability because their homes are mobile.

Shadrack Kamenya

(Ph.D. Anthropology 1997)

Shadrack has been working with the Jane Goodall Institute (JGI) for the past 25 years in research, conservation, and education.  From August 1997 to 2005 was working in managing chimpanzee research at the Gombe Stream Research Centre (GSRC) in Gombe National Park. The period between 2005 and 2018, was contributing more in research and conservation initiatives that took the Institute into the Masito Ugalla Ecosystem in Kigoma and Katavi Regions in Western Tanzania with more chimpanzees than Gombe. The past 5 years have been focusing on conservation awareness to leaders, communities, and young generation on biodiversity conservation and climate related issues.

Marnie Thomson (Ph.D. Anthropology 2017)

Marnie Thomson, Assistant Professor of Anthropology at Fort Lewis College, directed an ethnographic methods field school in Tanzania this summer.  In Durango, the students learned some Swahili and designed individual ethnographic research projects related to the program themes - international aid, COVID 19, and gender.  In Tanzania, students lived in a Chagga family home in Boma Ng'ombe.  FLC students worked with student translators from Tenegeru Institute of Community Development, and conducted participant observation at open air markets, in a Maasai village, in local neighborhoods and homes, at primary school, at a medical clinic, at Femme International (an NGO), and their translators' university.

Gregg Ortiz

(Ph.D. Anthropology 2021)

Gregg Ortiz works for as a director with CCS Fundraising.  CCS is a strategic fundraising consulting firm that partners with nonprofits to raise funds and strengthen organizations. Gregg joined the philanthropic world from academia, where he spent his time as a graduate scholar researching resource extraction and rural economic development. In this endeavor, he was awarded over $250,000 in prestigious grants and fellowships to better understand how community organizations play central roles in the complex relationships between community members and their natural resources.

Gregg is passionate about the dynamic world of philanthropy and has seen first-hand how nonprofit organizations play vital roles in their communities. As the philanthropic market continues to change, he recognizes the importance of aligning an organization's needs with the ambitions of its stakeholders and supporters.
