Using Research in STEM Education to Improve Teaching and Learning: A Conference for Community College Faculty

The Center for STEM Learning at the ÌÒÉ«ÊÓƵ is pleased to host a one-day conference for STEM faculty and staff at Colorado two-year colleges.

This event is designed to foster partnerships among faculty and researchers across Colorado's institutions of higher education.

The event will feature:

  • Workshops introducing research-based STEM education pedagogies and assessment methods tailored to the two-year college setting, including:

• Helping students learn through questions (Clickers and Peer Instruction)

• Using interactive simulations effectively for active learning

• Motivating students to prepare outside of class

• Using undergraduate learning assistants to facilitate classroom learning (The model).

  • Talks and a panel discussion focusing on STEM research in higher education, STEM research experiences for two-year college students, and how to get student 'buy in' to active learning. Presenters will include STEM education researchers and faculty from ÌÒÉ«ÊÓƵ and Colorado's two-year colleges

  • Opportunities to network with other two-year college faculty and staff, faculty at CU and others engaged in science education research.

Complimentary Continental breakfast, lunch and an end-of-day reception are also included in the day’s activities. A detailed schedule will be posted here soon.

Research on innovation in teaching has shown that there is greater success in implementing and sustaining changes in pedagogy when such efforts are taken up and shared by a group that can serve as a resource for practical advice and support beyond workshop participation. For this reason, we are asking that groups of at least three faculty, staff, and/or administrators per two-year college attend together. Registration is required, and is limited to 30 participants.
