Kage Policies
GENERAL POLICIES
Facilities and equipment are availableÌý³Ù´Ç students currently enrolled in a CINE course. Equipment access is subject to the student's course level.Ìý
Non-Cinema Studies students are NOT allowed to rent CinemaÌýStudies equipment. However, Alumni may reserve studios over the summer if classes aren't scheduled.Ìý
For questions on studio availability or Alumni requests email: thekage@colorado.eduÌý
The Kage is open Monday-Friday 10am-4pm. Students MUST make a reservation. If they have not made a reservation, they will not be allowed to check out equipment.Ìý
Reservations MUST be made 14 hours in advance (e.g. if you make your order at 10pm, the earliest you'll be able to pick up is 12pm the next day).Ìý
Sometimes, assignments spring up last minute. If a student wants to check out equipment without a reservation, they are only allowed to do so during our Walk-in Hours 2pm-4pm on Tuesdays and Fridays. Any other times, the student will be told to come back during walk-ins, or to make a reservation for the next day.Ìý

Students can rent gear for a maximum of 48 hours during the week. Students can reserve a maximum of 96 hours if they're reserving equipment over the weekend. For example, a student can reserve Thursday-Monday, or Friday-Tuesday without an added extension fee.Ìý
Any reservations over 48 hours (or 96 hours, if over the weekend) has a $5 extension fee and must be approved by a manager. Students may only extend ONCE per reservation.Ìý
Graduate students may reserve for longer than 48 hours depending on what type of equipment they want, and if that equipment is scheduled to be used during a class.Ìý
If you're a graduate student seeking a long equipment loan, please email rachel.johnson@colorado.eduÌý
KAGE RENTAL AGREEMENT
Students sign a Kage Rental Agreement at the beginning of every semester before they're able to check out equipment. Please make sure to show up 5 minutes early for your first check out of the semester to review and sign the contract to avoid any delays.Ìý
This contract covers general policies and expectations when renting equipment out from the Kage, as well as outline any penalizing fees and how to avoid them.
Late Fees, Damage/Mishandling Fees and Cleaning Fees are outlined below:Ìý
If you’re late for a return by 15 minutes, you will be charged late fees that will be paid upon the gear's return. However, fees will be waived if the student has communicated prior to their return time that they will be late. If that is the case, please call us at 303-492-1533 and explain the circumstances for why you are late. We will not accept circumstances explained over email if your check-in time has already passed at the time it was received.
Being late will result in being charged DOUBLE the rental fee per item. Each day an item is late, this fee will continue to double. If you are repeatedly late or have gone an extended period without any form of contact, The Kage reserves the right to BLOCK you from the system, and you will no longer be able to check out gear.
If an item/Kit Accessory is lost or broken, you will be charged the FULL RETAIL PRICE (including shipping) to replace it. If the item is of high value, the student is responsible for paying $500 at the very least.Ìý
Students are subject to a mishandling fee if an item is packaged incorrectly (e.g. cords haphazardly thrown in and smashed by the case, XLR cables wrapped incorrectly, etc.). This fee is applied for EACHITEM, and NOT for the reservation. Mishandling fees will NOT be charged if the student is present during the check in process to correct it.
This fee also applies to crucial accessories that have been lost. "Crucial accessories" are defined as small objects that, if missing, renders the entire item inoperable (e.g. a tripod screw). But, if The Kage has replacement parts in stock, the student will not have to pay the mishandling fee. However, they will be charged if The Kage does not have the parts on hand.Ìý
Studios and Labs are free to rent. They must be kept clean and restored to the state they were when your reservation started. Reference photos for studios can be found inside the room.
If a studio/lab is found messy after a student’s reservation, they will be charged a $10 cleaning fee before they will be able to reserve the space again.
